Hotels of our free trip- InterContinental Guatemala City, San Jose, Costa Rica and more

This past month we have been working on a bit of a “project trip” in attempt to demonstrate how one might go about an entirely free trip. So, we combined a PointBreaks strategy with a United-stopover strategy to see Panama City, Cali, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Guatemala City, Guatemala for free.

With this trip just now rapping up today, Drew and I were discussing which hotels were our favorite, so I thought I’d do a bit of a review for the InterContinental hotels we visited on this trip, as well as the destinations themselves. Click to keep reading…

The Best Promo in the World (Beginners’ Edition)

With some miles/points smarts, it’s possible to turn 3 paid nights into something like 10 award nights. Or imagine you could pay for 3 crappy Holiday Inns or 3 hotels you’d need anyways and get 2 free nights at any hotel in the world with points left over. Like the $1,000 a night InterContinental Bora Bora or one of my favorites is the InterContinental Hong Kong, or my Mom’s favorite (and where we stayed on the same floor as the president of South Korea) the InterContinental Paris. This promotion has so much potential. Click to keep reading…

Rumors of IHG Ending Ambassador/RA Status

On a German forum yesterday someone posted about their call with IHG calls center, where the agent stated that they will be “phasing out” RA status. This is a bit of a “he said she said”, as this phone agent had heard this from Ambassador services recently.

Then a second person in the comments said that a GM and front of office manager also indicated the exact same thing – that IHG will get rid of Ambassador status and RA status. Click to keep reading…

Top 5 places I should’ve gone on my honeymoon, but saved for a random Monday morning instead

When Drew and I fist got married, we were still working on our miles-bank, though miles and points were all Drew thought or talked about. We were frugal as ever so we planned our honeymoon at a cabin some friends were letting us borrow for free in Pennsylvania.

But we are both wanderlusters. So when our nights in PA were through and we still had some time before we needed to return to work, I looked at my brand new husband and told him to prove he wasn’t all talk with this points stuff. Just kidding. I didn’t say that but I begged him to find internet somewhere in the tiny PA town so we could see what exotic place his miles could take us. Click to keep reading…

An Introduction to PointBreaks

I’m always excited when it’s time for the PointBreaks list to come out. If it weren’t for IHG’s PointBreaks list, the cheapest IHG stay would be about 10,000 points and would get you into the cheapest Holiday Inn. But thanks to PointBreaks, the cheapest IHG stay can be had for 5,000 points and can get you something as nice as a 5 star InterContinental.Click to keep reading…

Kiev in all its gritty prettiness: thoughts and photos bookending 15 years of experiencing Kiev

I hold Kiev in a very special place in my heart for so many reasons. Firstly, when I was 5 years old my family invited a Russian/Ukrainian friend to live in our pseudo basement apartment while he looked for work. He spent a year living with us and became a close family friend. Then, when I was 12 or so we made a trip to Ukraine to visit his extended family members. That was my first time overseas and it will never ever ever be topped in terms of wide-eyed wonderment. I was too young to have many preconceived notions about any place so it was pure discovery. InterContinental Berchtesgaden- Rain or Shine?

Drew and I have been wanting to go to the InterContinental Berchtesgaden for a little while now. It was a bucket-list kind of hotel and InterContinental’s only mountain resort (until Davos opens up this winter). When Drew tried to book it for the dates we wanted though…sold out. No room at the InterContinental Berchtesgaden…until the following week. We’re flexible folks. We’re used to basing our travel plans around this or that availability but the problem was the week that showed availability was also a week that was calling for rain- 100% chance of rain on most of the days we’d be there.Click to keep reading…

The Dusseldorf InterContinental with "Best Price Guarantee"

Our flight to Zakynthos was a seemingly round-about one with a layover in Dusseldorf stuck in the middle. Made for a very long few days, let me tell you. As we were approaching this layover, we weren’t sure where we were going to stay as there just didn’t seem to be any good (cheap/free) options so we turned to one of our favorite tricks. A BRG.

In this post I’ll give you a brief run-down of how we got a free night at the InterContinental Dusseldorf (with club lounge access) by discussing the following things…Click to keep reading…
