March 2015 Expense Totals

Drew and I live off of miles and points. And for the sake of data, we track everything we spend. Each month I write a report of sorts, to show how much money, miles and points we’ve spent for our nomadic travel lifestyle. The idea is to show that we can spend the same amount or even less on a nomadic lifestyle as we could for a stationary life, thanks to the strategy of miles and points. Click to keep reading…

December expense totals and 2014 review

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful time bringing in the new year. We spent our new year dodging fireworks that the citizens and visitors of Budapest set off right in the middle of the street. Exciting yes. Dangerous, also yes.

Anyway, with not only December coming to an end, but 2014 as well, I decided to include not only the December totals in this post, but a comparative chart of all 2014 expenses. This chart includes some interesting extra information like monthly averages. Click to keep reading…

November Expense Totals 2014

What interests me more than this November’s totals is our entire total for expenses in 2014 so far.

So far in 2014 (with 1 month left to go) we have spent $20,285.41. Now, many of you may know that our goal for a whole year’s expenses is $20,000, so we’re going to come in just above that, but I have to say, I am pretty darn pleased with the kind of budget we’ve been able to maintain. You know what’s crazy? Airfare is often the one expense I just don’t have to worry about, and food is the expense I get stressed about because it’s always higher than I want it to be. Click to keep reading…

How was this month so cheap? We were hanging out with family, that’s how.

I love traveling. It’s the lifestyle that fits Drew and I. But I love visiting home too. It’s the place I feel most excited to visit because it’s the place where I have the most community. Click to keep reading…

June & July totals

A little more than a year ago our lease was drawing to an end in a cute little town house in Charlottesville, VA. We knew we couldn’t continue paying the rather steep rent so we had two options. Find a cheaper place was the obvious plan A. But…plan B was a bit riskier. We believed that since my income was just about enough to cover our rent, we would be in the same financial position as a nomadic couple with no stationary jobs, but also no stationary house to pay rent on. We could travel on just Drew’s income if there was no rent to pay. So we made a goal. Click to keep reading…

Flights got a little expensive this past month, namely because we like to save our miles for long-hauls if we’re running on the low side. And in India, short-hauls can end up being sort of long! It definitely added up. Still, somehow accommodations cost us more than flights. In part because we spent our anniversary at the Holiday Inn Phi Phi Island- paid nights. $100 would sound cheap in Europe but for Thailand that’s shelling it out. But we had an amazing time there. It’s a wonderful hotel thanks to location and a super friendly staff. Click to keep reading…

April Expense Totals

Each month I write a report of sorts, to show a bit of the bigger picture. For a more detailed list of each spend, go to the stats page or click here.

Contrary to last month, I was surprised that April ended up totaling as cheaply as it did. We spent most of April in India which is very cheap, but India is enormous and there’s so much we wanted to see, so I was suspecting the land transit and air transit costs to really rack up. Especially since the Indian Railway system works best if you book in advance and therefore I thought we’d be resorting to more expensive options more frequently. Click to keep reading…

March Expense Totals (Belated! Sorry!)

Oops! Sorry it took me so long to get to March expense totals.

I was really surprised when I ran the numbers for March, our first month in our favorite inexpensive continent, and discovered we weren’t managing to spend as little as I’d hoped. Why? What is costing so much in Asia? Click to keep reading…
